MANDAN, ND – A pair of first period goals by both
Alex Flicek and
Seth Cushing sparked the University of Mary to a 9-1 win over Dakota College at Bottineau. The nation's top-ranked ACHA Division 2 team, the Marauders scored five times in the opening period and twice in each of the next two to cruise to the victory over the Lumberjacks, ranked ninth in the region.
Cushing was one of two Marauders to generate three points in the game as he added one assist to his two goals.
Zach Garrett had one goal and two assists.
Four Marauders joined Flicek with a pair of points.
Andrew Huber has a goal and two assists and
Phillip Silveria,
Mathew Janke and
Kyler Moore posted two assists apiece.
Overall 17 of the Marauders 19 skaters posted points in the game.
Flicek got the Marauders rolling when he tallied just 1:49 into the game. Less than two minutes later Zane Macdonald evened the score for the Lumberjacks lone goal of the night.
Cushing regained the lead for the Marauders when he found the net at 10:06. UMary added three more goals by Garrett, Flicek and Cushing over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach for Dakota College, entering the first intermission with a 5-1 advantage.
The Marauders added a pair of goals in each of the next two periods. Huber and
Cody Shepard scored in the second and
Dalton Johnson and
Johnny Witzke tallied in the third.
UMary held a 48-21 edge in shots. The Marauders also scored the only two power play goals of the night on seven opportunities. Dakota College was 0-for-3 with the man advantage, including two with Marauders in the box serving 5-minute majors.
Kyle Hayden went the distance for the Marauders in net, finishing with 20 saves in the game. Nicholas Corneliusen had 39 saves for the Lumberjacks.
The Marauders (32-6-0 overall) and the Lumberjacks (13-10-3) wrap up their home-and-home weekend series with a 7 pm faceoff on Sunday, Jan. 26, in Bottineau, ND.
