WESTMINSTER, CO –
Dalton Johnson led a balanced University of Mary hockey attack that featured five goals by five different skaters in a 5-1 win over Metropolitan State University at Denver. Johnson posted a goal and two assists as the Marauders remain undefeated through the first three of four scheduled games at the Big Mountain Classic in Colorado.
After a scoreless opening period, the top-ranked team in ACHA Division II tallied twice in the second period.
Zach Garrett buried the puck on a power play opportunity at 13:14, taking a feed from
Marshall Tschida and
Andrew Huber.
The Marauders gained some momentum heading into intermission when
Mathew Janke scored with 40 seconds left in the second period to double the UMary lead.
UMary stunned MSU Denver with two goals in a 30 second span in the third period. Cushing tallied at 8:06 and
Alex Flicek increased the Marauders lead to 4-0 when he scored half a minute later.
After UMary gave up its first goal of the weekend at 13:22, Johnson capped the scoring when he found the net at 18:28.
The Marauders, 30-6 on the season, outshot the Roadrunners 37-20. UMary finished 1-for-3 on the power play while MSU Denver was unable to convert in three chances with a man advantage.
Kyle Hayden was the winning goalkeeper for the Marauders, stopping 19 of the 20 shots he faced in the game.
In addition to Johnson, two other Marauders had multiple points in the game.
Johnny Witzke had two assists and Janke had a goal and an assist.
The Marauders wrap up the Big Mountain Classic against the University of Colorado on Monday, January 20.
