Big night behind the arc carries Marauders past Mustangs 75-60

BISMARCK, ND – Ripping the nets from downtown for a second straight Saturday night, the University of Mary men's basketball team downed visiting Southwest Minnesota State University 75-60. The Marauders splashed 15 treys and five different players scored a dozen points for UMary.

Jaylan White keyed the UMary victory, setting a UMary NCAA-era record for assists with 12. His previous high was eight, a total he matched a week ago in a win over St. Cloud State University. UMary's previous NCAA-era record was 11 by Marquealis Edwards against Presentation College on Dec. 15, 2015.

White was also one of five Marauders with 12 points. The senior made a pair of treys, hit both his free throws, grabbed five rebounds and made two steals to earn player of the game honors.

Marauders head coach Joe Kittell earned his 100th career collegiate coaching victory in the game. This is his 58th win at UMary after recording 42 at Lake Region State College.

Starters Glenn Jordan and Wyatt Carr also scored 12 points each. Jordan scored five of his points at the free throw line. Carr drained three treys in four attempts.

The Marauders scored 35 points off the bench, with Josh Sipes and Kade Amundson scoring 12 each and combining to make 5-of-6 shots from behind the arc. Sipes was 2-for-3 downtown and Amundson made all three of his trey attempts. Amundson also had six rebounds.

Justin Engg added eight points off the bench, hitting a pair of treys.

Matthew Kreklow, the Marauders leading scored on the season, was limited to four points and led the squad with seven rebounds.

The Marauders were deadly behind the arc, making 15-of-30 trey attempts. Eight different UMary players hit a 3-pointer in the contest. The team just missed the NCAA-era school record of 17, set in the 2008-09 season at Saint Martins.

This is the second straight Saturday night at the McDowell Activity Center where the Marauders put on a show from the outside. Last Saturday in an 85-80 home win over St. Cloud State, UMary knocked down 11-of-19 shots from behind the arc.

Overall the Marauders (9-9 overall, 4-8 Northern Sun) shot 48.1 percent from the floor. After hitting 54 percent of their shots in the first half, the Mustangs (6-12, 3-9) connected on just 33.3 percent of their shots in the second half as the Marauders cranked up their defensive intensity. SMSU finished the night at 44 percent overall, including a 7-of-18 effort on 3s.

UMary finished with a 31-28 edge on the boards and was +5 in turnovers.

Nick Dufault hit five treys and scored 16 points for SMSU. Kenny Byers added 14 points and five assists.

Down by as many as eight points in the first half, the Marauders used a 30-11 run to build a 36-25 lead in the first half. During the run, UMary hit 7-of-8 shots behind the arc to stun SMSU.

The Marauders delivered the knockout punch early in the second half, using a 16-5 run to build a 56-40 advantage. SMSU managed to pull within single digits at 60-52. Carr responded with a pair of free throws before White and Amundson hit treys in an 8-4 run that pushed UMary back to a double digit lead that was maintained the remained of the game.

UMary next visits the University of Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State University on Jan. 24-25, the start of a four-game road trip.
