FORT COLLINS and BOULDER, CO – The nation's top-ranked University of Mary hockey team opened the Big Mountain Classic with a pair of wins. After setting a school scoring record in a 23-0 drubbing of Grand Canyon University late Friday night, the Marauders edged past the University of Oregon 2-0 on Saturday.
Game 1: University of Mary 23 Grand Canyon University 0 (late Friday)
In UMary's first outing following the program's first-ever loss to an ACHA Division II West Region foe, the Marauders pummeled the Lopes 23-0, setting school records for goals and shots.
Headlined by
Andrew Huber's 50
th career goal, all 18 UMary skaters recorded points in the game with a dozen players scoring goals. Four Marauders posted hat tricks and three had 7-point performances. The Marauders 3
rd and 4
th lines scored 12 of the team's last 14 goals.
One of four players with a hat trick,
Cody Shepard scored his first collegiate goal in the game. He also added an assist.
Phillip Silveria posted three goals and four assists to reach seven points in the game.
Dalton Johnson had three goals and three assists and
Kyler Moore added three goals and one assists.
Johnny Witzke and
Logan Kraft also had seven-point games, both recording two goals and five assists.
Jonathan Sundell added two goals and an assist.
Alex Flicek finished with five points on one goal and four assists.
Drew Lenertz added three assists in the game. Others with multiple points in the game were
Seth Cushing (one goal, two assists),
David Ruiz (two assists), Huber (one goal, one assist),
Noah Scordato (two assists) and
Mathew Janke (one goal, three assists).
Making his first start in net,
Maysion Mattern made 29 saves in the shutout victory.
The Marauders posted six goals in the first period and seven in the second before lighting the lamp ten times in the third.
UMary held a massive 87-29 edge in shots on net. Both teams had three power play opportunities. The Marauders twice took advantage of the man advantage to score goals.
Game 2: University of Mary 2 University of Oregon 0 (Saturday)
Lance Knudson stopped 21 shots to record his fourth shutout of the season and second period goals by
Alex Flicek and
Seth Cushing carried the Marauders to a 2-0 victory over the Ducks in the first meeting between the two programs.
Following a scoreless first period, Flicek broke the scoreless tie right out of the first intermission. With assists from
Phillip Silveria and
Kyler Moore, Flicek scored just 1:18 into the second period.
Cushing doubled the UMary lead to 2-0 at the 11:02 mark. Garrett and
Marshall Tschida picked up assists on the goal.
UMary then turned the game over to Knudson and the defense. The senior goalkeeper turned away seven shots on the final period to give the Marauders their second win this weekend at the MLK Showcase. A night of consistency, Knudson posted seven saves in all three periods.
The Marauders unleashed 45 shots at Oregon netminder Grayson Parkes, who posted 43 saves.
The Ducks finished 0-for-4 on the power play. The Marauders failed to score on two attempts with a man advantage.
UMary, now 29-6 on the season, next faces Metro State University of Denver on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 1 pm in Westminster, CO. The Marauders final game in the Big Mountain Classic is set for Monday, Jan. 20, against the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO.
