MANDAN, ND – In the season's first meeting between the top two teams in the ACHA Division II West Region, top-ranked University of Mary rolled past visiting University of Providence 6-1.
Alex Flicek posted a pair of goals and an assist for the Marauders and became the first UMary player to reach 100 career points.
The Marauders scored the first four goals of the game, striking once in the first period and three times in the second.
Cyril Nagurski scored the only goal of the opening stanza, finding the net at 11:40 off a feed from
Drew Lenertz. Lenertz would finish the game with a pair of helpers.
A dominant second period sealed the game for the Marauders. Alex Huber doubled the UMary lead at 4:13 when he connected for the first of two Marauders power play goals.
Flicek then stole the show. After increasing the Marauders lead to 3-0 just 23 seconds after Huber's goal, Flicek tallied shorthanded at 17:14.
Despite eight power play opportunities, the Argos managed to score just one goal on an even-strength opportunity by Cody Hendrickson at 6:14 of the 3
rd period. UMary then retaliated with goals by
Zach Garrett and
Matt Winkle.
Lance Knudson had a big night in net for the Marauders. He posted 26 saves in the game despite facing eight Providence power plays. Tristian Lewis had 39 saves for the Argos.
The Marauders (27-5-0) remain undefeated all-time against West Region opposition across two seasons as an ACHA program, posting a mark of 47-0-1. UMary's weekend series against Providence (14-7-0) concludes on Saturday, Jan. 11. The puck drops at 7 pm at the Schwann Cadillac Rink at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, ND.
