Offensive explosion carries Marauders past Wildcats 4-0

WAYNE, NE – A pair of quick strike goals early in the opening half by Sidney Burrell and Noelle Vigneri led the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 4-0 road win over Wayne State College. The pair struck twice two minutes apart in the first 16 minutes of play to set the tone for the Northern Sun match.

After UMary generated two corner kicks but no shots in the opening minutes, Wayne State managed the first two shot of the game, the second stopped by Marauders goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman.

The Marauders immediately countered the Wildcats attack. After a missed shot by Hannah Richter, Burrell knocked home the first goal of the game at 13:52 for a 1-0 Marauders lead. It was the senior forward's first counter of the season with Richter picking up an assist.

Just 2:01 later, Vigneri scored her first collegiate goal, tallying unassisted to double the Marauders advantage to 2-0.

The Marauders sealed their first NSIC victory of the season early in the second half. Richter, off a helper from Vigneri, found the net at the 54:05 mark.

Following on the heels of two more corner kicks, Samantha Guzman knocked home the Marauders fourth and final goal of the game, just 3:18 after Richter's counter. A junior defender in her first season at UMary after transferring from Peninsula College, it was Guzman's first goal for UMary. The assist was awarded to Malia Brudvik, a senior defender who had previously played with Guzman at Peninsula.

The Marauders held advantages in shots (12-9), shots on frame (6-4) and corner kicks (9-1). WSC committed 12 fouls to eight for UMary.

The shutout was the fourth in five games this season for UMary as the Marauders have allowed just one goal. Waltman made four saves to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season and the 12th of her career.

The four goals are the most for the Marauders since defeating the University of Minnesota Crookston 4-1 in October 2017. The four-goal margin of victory was UMary's largest since defeating MSU Moorhead 5-0 in the final game of the 2015 season.

The Marauders return home to celebrate 25 years of soccer at UMary next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 4, the Marauders host Minnesota State University at 3 pm before a men's and women's soccer alumni social on Saturday, Oct. 5. The weekend concludes with tailgating and a home game against Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, Oct. 6. Visit www.goumary.com/soccer25 for more information.
