BOISE, ID – Owning the third period for the second straight day, the University of Mary hockey team defeated Weber State University 3-1 on day two of the Bronco Showcase in Boise, ID.
Kyler Moore scored two goals in the game,
Matt Winkle assisted on all three, and UMary found the net twice in the final stanza as the Marauders remain undefeated on the season.
Despite a 12-2 edge in shots for UMary in the opening period, neither team could dent the net until the second period. The Wildcats scored quickly out of the first intermission, needing just 1:41 to take a 1-0 lead on an Andrew Gorges goal.
Moore didn't take too long to find the equalizer, beating the Wildcats goalkeeper at the 5:50 off a feed from
Matt Winkle. UMary continued to press and grew its shots lead to 28-13 after two as the score remained 1-1.
In a win over Northern Arizona the night before to open the Bronco Showcase, the Marauders outscored the Ice Jacks 2-1 in the final period to claim a 4-3 win. Today UMary kept the same formula, tallying the only two goals of the third to increase the Marauders season record to 5-0.
Combining once again with Winkle, Moore scored for the second time in the game at 8:22 to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead.
Finding themselves shorthanded in the closing minutes, the Marauders turned the situation to their advantage.
Seth Cushing, off Winkle's third assist of the game, scored shorthanded into an empty net with 1:51 left in the contest to seal UMary's win.
Making his second start of the season,
Kyle Hayden stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced in the game to earn the win for UMary. Kyle Lane faced 35 shots and made 33 saves for Weber State, ranked 15
th in the final West Region poll last season.
The Marauders next face Bronco Showcase host Boise State University on Saturday, Sept. 28.
