JAMESTOWN, ND – A furious rally in the final period of play carried the University of Mary to a 5-3 road win over the University of Jamestown. Behind a pair of goals by
Seth Cushing for the second straight game, UMary scored four times in the third period to overcome a two-goal deficit as the ACHA Division II Marauders knocked off the ACHA Division I Jimmies.
Winning their third straight game to open the 2019-20 season, the Marauders improve to 3-2 all-time against the Jimmies, who made the ACHA Division I national tournament last season.
Trailing for the first time this season after the Jimmies scored single goals in each of the first and second periods, the Marauders cut their deficit to 2-1 at 9:57 of the middle stanza. All-West region defenseman
Marshall Tschida found the net for the first time this season after taking a feed from
Alex Flicek and
Kyler Moore.
The Jimmies pushed their advantage back to two goals just 2:40 into the third period. From there on out, the rest of the night belonged to the Marauders.
Fresh off scoring three goals during the opening weekend,
Zach Garrett kept the hot hand when he found the net at 5:55 of the final period to start a run of four straight for the Marauders.
Dalton Johnson picked up the lone assist.
Playing his first season with the Marauders, Cushing continued to display a knack for scoring, tying the game 3-3 at 8:48 with assists for
Josh Colleaux and
Mathew Janke.
Less than two minutes later, Flicek completed the comeback and gave the Marauders their first lead when
Matt Winkle and Moore set him up for the go-ahead goal at 10:03.
Cushing eventually secured the win by scoring his second goal of the night and fourth in two games with just 2:23 left in the game, once again taking advantage of assists from Colleaux and Janke.
Lance Knudson was strong between the pipes for the Marauders, stopping 24 of the 27 shots he faced in the game to earn his 20
th career win at UMary without a loss. Two of the goals he allowed were on Jimmies power plays.
After firing 60 shots in both games of a weekend sweep against North Dakota State University, the Marauders were limited to 26 shots but scored on five.
The Marauders finished 0-for-3 on the power play and committed six infractions for 12 minutes. The Jimmies went 2-for-5 on the power play and committed four penalties for 11 minutes.
