Seniors lead Marauders to win over Wolves in season finale

WEBSTER, SD – Pitching for the last time in a University of Mary uniform, seniors Colin Gudereit, Travis Holte and Chris Scott led the Marauders to victory in the final game of the season. The trio struck out eight and held Northern State University to one earned run in a 6-2 Marauders victory over the Wolves. Northern State held off a late charge to win the day's opening game 10-7.
 
The Marauders finished the 2019 season with 17 wins overall and 12 in Northern Sun play in head coach Mark Moriarty's first season at UMary. The 17 overall wins is the most for the program since the team won 17 in 2013. The dozen conference wins is the most since winning 12 NSIC games in 2010. The Marauders jumped to ninth in the league standings after finishing 15th the past four years.
 
GAME 1 Northern State 10 UMary 7
The Marauders scored the first two runs of the game and the last four but couldn't overcome a pair of big innings in the middle by the Wolves. Northern State connected for four home runs and seven extra base hits while UMary hit one double. Chris Scott drove in three runs for the Marauders, Connor Doll scored three times, Jesus Payan added three hits and Darius Barlas scored twice and drove in two runs to pace the Marauders attack.
 
PIVOT POINT
UMary jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Northern State responded with seven runs combined in the third and fourth innings. A run scoring single and a 2-run home run from Spencer Sarringar in the third gave the Wolves the lead. A trio of home runs in the fourth, including a 2-run shot by Mikey Adams, pushed the Northern State advantage to 8-3.

The Marauders senior trio of Colin Gudereit, Travis Holte and Chris Scott combined to strike out eight hitters and held the Wolves to one earned run and eight hits over seven innings in their final appearance for UMary. Offensively senior accounted for five runs, all but one of the team's eight hits and all five runs batted in.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
UMary scored an unearned run in the third inning before taking control of the game in the fourth inning, crossing the plate four times. Daulton Sauce doubled home Travis Stevens with the opening run. Darius Barlas soon followed with a two-run single through the right side before Payan pulled a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield. The rest of the game belonged to the Marauders pitchers.

Marauders relievers allowed just one earned run in 7.1 innings of work on the day… Jesus Payan finished the season with a .387 batting average. He had five hits on the day and was 9-for-16 in the four game series with a pair of 3-hit games.
 
The Marauders finish the 2019 regular season 17-32 overall and 12-24 in NSIC play. The Wolves are 25-23 and 19-16.
