Dominant pitching, timely hitting keys Marauders sweep of Cougars

QUINCY, IL – Dominant pitching headlined by performances from Andrew Brooks and Zac Martin and timely hitting in both games carried the University of Mary baseball team to a three-game series sweep of the University of Sioux Falls. After winning the Northern Sun opener for both teams on Sunday, UMary followed with 5-2 and 4-3 wins today as Marauders pitchers limited the Cougars to a combined five hits over the doubleheader.

The Marauders record improves to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in the Northern Sun. In head coach mark Moriarty's first year with the Marauders, UMary has already exceeded its overall and conference win totals from last season. The doubleheader sweep was the first for the Marauders since taking two from Bemidji State University on April 26, 2017. The sweep of a two-day series is the first for the Marauders since taking four conference games from the University of Minnesota Crookston on April 26-27, 2008.

GAME 1 UMary 5 Sioux Falls 2
Striking out a career-high nine batters, Andrew Brooks dominated on the hill for the Marauders. The sophomore righthanded allowed just two hits and two runs in six innings while walking four to earn his first collegiate win. Charles Bielejeski picked up his first collegiate save, striking out three hitters and pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

PIVOT POINT
Flexing their offensive power, the Marauders scored three times in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and take control of the game. Jesus Payan led off the fourth with a single to center and scored on a double to right from Daulton Sauce. Freshman Braeton Wixo then delivered a one-out double to center to score Sauce. A single by Jaxon Kostka before Jaxon Ford was drilled by a pitch loaded the bases for Jonathan Draheim, who singled home Wixo for the final run of the inning.

STAT OF THE GAME

It is the third time this season Marauders pitchers have struck out 12 hitters in one game. That is the most by a Marauders pitching staff since Jake Johnson posted 13 strikeouts in a complete game effort during a 5-3 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth on May 7, 2016.

Game 2 UMary 4 Sioux Falls 3
Forced to play from behind for the first time all weekend, the Marauders scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to overcome a 3-1 deficit to the Cougars and earn a third straight win. The victory also gives the Marauders wins in all four games against the Cougars this season as UMary also defeated USF once in Florida over spring break in a non-conference tilt.

PIVOT POINT I
Forced to enter the game in the second inning with runners on the corners and no one out, Zac Martin limited the Cougars to a single run. A ground ball out off the bat of the first hitter he faced scored the only run of the inning and the second of the game for USF. Keeping the ball on the infield with now another runner at third, Martin induced a groundball back to the hill and, after walking a batter with two outs, he finished the inning with a grounder to third base. Martin later allowed an unearned run in the fourth.

PIVOT POINT II
Trailing 3-1, the Marauders scored twice in the fifth inning to tie the game. With the bases loaded after a Jaxon Ford leadoff single, a walk and a hit batter, Ford scored on a Connor Doll sacrifice fly. Jesus Payan followed with a game-tying single to right, scoring William Kranz… With the momentum now behind the Marauders, Braeton Wixo hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning, a one-out solo shot to right field.
