Specialty units dominate as Marauders complete weekend sweep of Tetons 5-2

MANDAN, ND – For the second straight night, the University of Mary specialty units packed a potent punch and delivered the 36th win of the season for the Marauders, a 5-2 victory over visiting Williston State College. The Marauders scored three power play goals while finding the net once while shorthanded to complete a weekend sweep of the Tetons.
 
Ranked first in the ACHA Division II West region rating, UMary improves to 36-4-2-1 on the season. The Tetons are ranked 5th in the region. 
 
One night after scoring four power play goals in a 7-2 road win over WSC, UMary converted three times in four chances with a man advantage. Additionally the Marauders penalty kill unit kept the Tetons power play unit off the score sheet in five opportunities while also tallying once while skating a man down.
 
Alex Flicek scored the opening goal of the day with the Marauders shorthanded. The first of four straight UMary goals, the Bismarck, ND, native found the net just 3:43 into the game. It was his first of two goals in the game and granted the Marauders a 1-0 lead after the first period.
 
After opening the scoring while shorthanded, the Marauders turned to their power play in order to double their lead. Andrew Heckeman, with assists from Jakob Parisien and Marshall Tschida, tallied at 11:18 of the second for a 2-0 lead.
 
The third period began with a bang. With a 5-on-3 advantage after two Tetons penalties late in the second, Flicek increased the Marauders lead to 3-0 just 30 seconds into the final period. Kyler Moore then finished the Marauders run of four straight goals at the 1:56 mark with UMary's first and only even strength goal of the game.
 
The Tetons finally broke through less than a minute after Moore's goal to close within 4-1.
 
Halfway through the third the Marauders sealed up the game on a power play goal by Tschida for an insurmountable 5-1 advantage.
 
Marauders goalkeeper Aaron Nelson ensured the UMary advantage held up. The Bismarck, ND, native stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the game. Angus Laing also posted 28 saves for the Tetons.
 
Flicek led the Marauders offense with two goals and an assist. With a goal and two assists, Tschida also had a three-point night. Flicek leads the team with 35 goals and is tied for second on the squad in points with Moore as both have 53. Tschida is the UMary leader in points (54) and assists (42).  
 
Drew Lenertz picked up a pair of assists and seven different Marauders posted points on the night.
 
A busy night in the penalty box, the Marauders were whistled for nine infractions totaling 26 minutes while the Tetons were cited eight times for 19 minutes.
 
Down to their last four games of their inaugural season, the Marauders next face Dakota College at Bottineau in a home-and-home series. UMary hosts the first game on Feb. 16 before the location changes to Bottineau on Feb. 17.
