DULUTH, MN – Visiting University of Mary came up just short in knocking off the preseason Northern Sun North Division coaches' favorite University of Minnesota Duluth. The Marauders closed within a basket down the stretch before the Bulldogs pulled away late to defeat UMary 73-62.
Jaylan White led the Marauders with 17 and
Connor Hellebust added 16.
Trever Kaiser came off the bench to score 12 for UMary.
Down as many as 15 points in the opening half, the Marauders (5-3 overall, 1-2 NSIC) closed the gap to 38-33 at intermission. Continuing to push, the Marauders pulled within 56-54 on a 3-pointer by Hellebust with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
Free throws and treys won the game in the closing minutes for UMD (8-1, 3-0). Alex Illikainen answered the Hellebust trey with a three-point play. Logan Rohrscheib then hit a pair of 3's and the Bulldogs knocked down 7-of-8 free throws in the final four minutes to hold off UMary.
White added three assists and two steals to his 17 points. Hellebust knocked down three treys and added two assists to his 16 points. Kaiser added two 3's and three rebounds to his 12 points.
Matthew Kreklow had nine rebounds and two blocks.
Brandon Myer led UMD with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Entwhisle dished 10 assists.
UMary shot 42 percent for the game, including a 7-for-32 effort behind the arc. UMD hit 47 percent of its shots and knocked down 8-of-23 3-point attempts.
After playing their first three NSIC games of the season on the road, the Marauders return home to the McDowell Activity Center to host MSU Moorhead and Northern State on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14.
