BISMARCK, ND – Two goals in the first 61 seconds of play set the tone in a 4-0 University of Mary loss to Minot State University. In a penalty-filled game, the Marauders couldn't overcome the early deficit in a battle between two of the nation's top ACHA programs.
The Marauders are ranked first in the nation in ACHA Division II. The defending national champion, the Beavers are ranked second in ACHA Division I.
UMary slips to 24-5 overall. Minot State is 16-1-2.
In a game that featured 28 combined infractions, 79 penalty minutes and four game disqualifications, the Beavers struck first when Kent Walchuk scored 19 seconds into the game. Minot State doubled its lead 42 second later on an Adam Wowryk goal. The visitors then added single goals in each of the next two periods, both on power plays.
Kyle Hayden stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced for the Marauders. Minot State goalie Holden Kurtz registered 31 saves to record the shutout. It was the first time UMary has been held without a goal in program history, snapping a string of scoring a goal in 75 straight games.
The Marauders finished 0-for-4 on the power play. The Beavers converted twice in nine opportunities with the man advantage.
UMary next hosts a weekend series against North Dakota State University. The series opener on Saturday, Dec. 14, is the Marauders second annual Teddy Bear Toss.
