MANDAN, ND – A potent power play and a skilled penalty kill unit propelled the University of Mary to an 8-0 victory, completing a weekend and season sweep of North Dakota State University in ACHA Division II hockey. The Marauders scored four goals with a man advantage and killed off five power play opportunities for the Bison.
Kyler Moore posted four assists in the game, making the key pass on the Marauders first two goals.
Dalton Johnson,
Alex Flicek and
Andrew Huber all scored two goals in the game for UMary.
The win gives the Marauders their tenth win in their last 12 games. Ranked third in the nation and first in the ACHA Division II West Region, UMary improves to 26-5 on the season. NDSU, ranked 20
th in the ACHA Division II Central Region, falls to 11-10-1-1.
Following a quiet start to the game, the Marauders took advantage of multiple miscues by the Bison and exploded for three power play goals in a span of four minutes. Sitting on the doorstep of the Bison goal, Johnson knocked home a pass from Moore to open the scoring at 11:15 of the first period.
NDSU was then called for a major penalty and the Marauders made the Bison pay, scoring twice before the five minutes expired. Planted on the side of the net,
Matt Winkle scored the second Marauders goal of the game on another perfect feed by Moore at 13:00. UMary tallied one more time on the major when
Marshall Tschida rifled a shot just under the crossbar at 15:13.
Continuing to press offensively in the second period, Flicek scored the Marauders first even strength goal at 11:25 before Huber tallied with the man advantage at 18:11, providing UMary a comfortable 5-0 advantage entering the second intermission.
The Marauders finished off the Bison with three goals in the third period as Flicek, Huber and Johnson all found the net for their second goals of the contest.
NDSU was whistled for 100 penalty minutes on 19 infractions, leading to 11 power play opportunities for UMary. Four times the Bison were for game misconducts, including one on their head coach. The Marauders had seven penalties for 22 minutes.
Johnson and Flicek added an assist to their two goals to finish with three points.
Seth Cushing also finished with three points, all on assists. Other Marauders with multiple points include Winkle (goal and assist) and
Zach Garrett (two assists).
Hayden earned his second shutout of the season, posting saves on all 15 shots he faced. The Marauders peppered Bison goaltender Ryan Bielenberg with 49 shots.
Now off for nearly a month, the Marauders return to action January 10-11 when UMary hosts the University of Providence.
