ALVA, OK –
Connor Hellebust followed up a double double in the season opener with a team-leading 18 points in the second outing of the year for the University of Mary. The junior guard was the lone Marauders player to reach double digits as UMary closed out the GAC/MIAA/NSIC Crossover with an 85-54 loss to Northeaster State University.
Hellebust hit a pair of treys and went 6-of-8 at the line. The junior guard also had four rebounds as the Marauders fall to 1-1 on the season. He had 12 points and ten rebounds in an opening victory over Central Oklahoma.
"We lost to a very good basketball team with a lot of experience," said Marauders head coach
Joe Kittell. "We weren't ready for their speed and couldn't keep the ball out of the lane.
"We have a chance to be a very good team but we need to get home and get a little healthier."
The Marauders played their second straight game sans starting forwards
Matthew Kreklow and
Lucas Mayer, due to illness and injury.
Struggling to score early, the Marauders trailed 12-2 at the first media timeout less than five minutes into the game. Unable to pull any closer than seven points, UMary trailed 39-23 at intermission.
Glenn Jordan came off the bench to score nine points for UMary.
Jaylan White added eight points and
Kade Amundson seven.
Caleb Smith led the Riverhawks with 17 points. Brad Davis added 11 and all 11 of the NSU players scored in the game.
Northeastern State improves to 2-0 with the win.
Next up for UMary is the Marauders home opener against Presentation College at 6 pm on Friday, Nov. 15, at the McDowell Activity Center.
