Marauders complete weekend sweep of Lumberjacks on Military Appreciation Night

MANDAN, ND – Fittingly on a night the University of Mary hockey team honored the veterans and active members of the United State Armed Forces, the Marauders used a total team effort to defeat visiting Dakota College 6-2. Five Marauders contributed the six goals and ten skaters posted points on Military Appreciation Night as UMary completed a weekend sweep of the Lumberjacks.

The Marauders, ranked first in the ACHA Division II West Region and second in the country, improved to 18-3 overall on the season with the win over the Lumberjacks, the 7th ranked team in the West Region. UMary improved their undefeated streak against West region teams to 43.

Wearing camouflage jerseys with stars, stripes and the UMary lettermen's logo in the first period of play, the Marauders struck twice before the first intermission. Dalton Johnson opened the scoring at the 18:50 mark and Alex Flicek followed 20 seconds later with UMary's second goal of the night for a 2-0 lead after one period.

Before the skaters of both teams left the ice for intermission, a recognition ceremony was held for veterans and service members. The Marauders took off their jerseys and presented them to 25 current and former members of the US Armed Forces. Each jersey featured the uniform number of a UMary skater but were personalized with the last name of the veteran who received the Marauders hockey sweaters.

When play resumed the Marauders increased their lead to 3-0 on a Seth Cushing goal at 3:16 of the second period. The Lumberjacks got on the board for the first time at 12:19 but the Marauders regained a three-goal advantage when Cyril Nagurski found the net at 18:45.

UMary added two more goals in the third period. Cushing struck again just 3:16 into the final stanza and Cyril Nagurski scored late to offset the Lumberjacks lone goal of the period.

In addition to their goals, Johnson and Janke also added assists on the night.

The Marauders held a 58-23 edge in shots over the Lumberjacks.

UMary next hosts St. Thomas on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17.
