MANDAN, ND – Goals by
Andrew Huber and
Alex Flicek late in the second period carried the University of Mary to a 3-1 win and a weekend sweep of the University of St. Thomas. In a matchup between two of the top ACHA Division II teams in the upper Midwest, both goals came in the final two minutes prior to the second intermission.
The Marauders, ranked first in the West region poll, improves to 20-3 on the season. The fifth-ranked team in the Central, the Tommies slip to 10-5.
Huber broke a 1-1 tie at 18:15 of the second period. Taking a drop pass from Flicek in the left circle, Huber beat Tommies goaltender Samuel Haupfear with a shot low on the right side.
UMary doubled its lead just a short time later. Finding a loose puck in the slot close to the left circle, Flicek elevated a shot into the upper reaches of the net, hitting the water bottle in the process of providing the Marauders a 3-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the period.
Cody Shepard and
Marshall Tschida picked up assists on the goal.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the third period with St. Thomas earning three power play opportunities and the Marauders two but neither team could find the net. Marauders goalkeeper
Kyle Hayden posted seven of his 20 saves in the final period while the Tommies Haupfear made eight of his 35 saves in the third period.
Kyler Moore opened the scoring with a goal at 4:48 of the first period, firing home a
Matt Winkle pass from the slot. Winkle picked up the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the right side before making the centering pass to Moore.
St. Thomas pulled even at 8:29 of the second period when Samuel Ohmes knocked home a rebound in front in the slot from in front of the net.
The Marauders next play four games in four days in Utah, opening against Brigham Young in Provo on Nov. 21.
