Winkle strikes twice as Marauders knock down Tetons 6-1

MANDAN, ND – Matt Winkle scored his first two goals for the University of Mary and tacked on an assist to get the Marauders back to their winning ways as the Marauders defeated visiting Williston State College 6-1.

Coming off a pair of road losses last weekend at Florida Gulf Coast, the two-time defending ACHA Division II national champion, the Marauders rebounded in a big way. UMary is now 15-2-0 on the season and remains undefeated all-time against teams in the ACHA Division II West Region, improving to 39-0-1 over two seasons.

After a subdued start to the game, the Marauders opened the scoring at 9:31 of the first period when Dalton Johnson went high over the shoulder of Tetons goaltender Brady Klassen. Johnson played for Williston State last season. Andrew Heckeman doubled the Marauders lead just over two minutes later when his shot from the right point slid into the net between the right post and Klassen's skate.

UMary's third goal didn't come until just before the second intermission. With 10.1 seconds remaining in the second period, Seth Cushing scored a power play goal after taking a feed from Drew Lenertz.

The Marauders struck quickly and often in the third period. It took Winkle 39 seconds out of intermission to increase the Marauders lead to 4-0. It was his first Marauders goal after logging a team-best 16 assists. Winkle soon increased his assist total also, as Flicek cleaned up a rebound off a Winkle shot at 4:52.

Winkle finished off the Marauders scoring at 11:12, increasing the UMary advantage to 6-0.

Thomas King tallied the only Tetons goal with 55.7 seconds left in the game.

Winkle was the lone Marauders player to tally two goals. He also added an assist for a 3-pount night. Johnson, Cushing and Flicek all finished with a goal and an assist. Johnny Witzke finished with two assists.

Kyle Hayden stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced for the Marauders. Klassen had 42 saves for the Tetons.

A disciplined Marauders team took just one penalty on the night to five for the Tetons.

The two teams wrap up their weekend series in a neutral site game in Watford City, ND, on Saturday, Oct. 26. Game time is 7 pm.
