Richter keys Marauders victory in explosive offensive season opener

BILLINGS, MT – An explosive opening half and a pair of goals by Hannah Richter after intermission propelled the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 5-3 opening day win over Black Hills State University. The Marauders scored three unanswered goals in the first half of the non-conference game against the Yellowjackets and built a 5-1 lead to kick off play at the Rimrock Classic, hosted by MSU Billings.

Senior forward Caylin Cathey opened the scoring for the Marauders. Taking a cross from the right corner off the foot of fellow senior Lisa Swärdh, Cathey deftly finished from three yards out, striking the ball inside the far post in the ninth minute of play.

Less than nine minutes later, Swärdh doubled the Marauders lead at 2-0. After beating her defender on the right side, she bounced a left-footed shot from the far wing off the far post.

The Marauders advantage grew to 3-0 at half as Jade Smith took a long cross from the right side by Richter and placed her shot high in the net at 27:04 of the period.

After providing a first half helper, Richter tallied herself 12 minutes into the second half. Taking a through ball from Taylor Pettigrew, Richter scored low through the goal keeper's legs.

The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard in the 61st minute but Richter retaliated four minutes later. Gobbling up a cross from the left side from Cathey, Richter finished low past the Black Hills State keeper as she charged the ball to build an insurmountable four-goal advantage at 5-1.

In a game where 20 players saw action for the Marauders, the Yellowjackets found the netting twice in the final 18 minutes of play.

UMary dominated the stat sheet, posting a 22-5 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Richter registered five points for the Marauders with two goals and an assist. Swärdh and Cathey both had a goal and an assist.

Mikayla Hernandez scored all three goals for BHSU.

The Marauders close out the Rimrock Classic against the University of Nebraska Kearney on Saturday, September 8. Game time is 1 pm CST / 12 noon MT.
