Flicek leads Marauders offensive onslaught in win over UND club team

GRAND FORKS, ND – Playing their first road game in program history, the University of Mary hockey team powered past the University of North Dakota club hockey team 5-1 behind a pair of goals by Alex Flicek.

The Marauders dominated the shot chart, blasting 51 attempts on goal while allowing just 26 shots. Following a similar pattern from UMary's first two games, the Marauders offense improved as the game progressed. After scoring one goal on 13 shots in the first period, the Marauders scored a pair of goals in each of the next two periods, taking 20 shots in the second and 18 in the third.

Behind the goaltending of Aaron Nelson, the Marauders defense held UND in check. Nelson proved stellar in the opening period, stopping all 12 shots he faced in the first stanza. The UMary defense tightened up over the next two periods, allowing eight shots in the second and six in the third. The lone goal allowed came in the final period after UMary had scored the opening three goals.

Andy Huber opened the scoring for UMary with 6:41 remaining in the opening period, taking a feed from Zachery Garrett.

The Marauders expanded their lead late in the second. Phillip Silveria scored a shorthanded goal with 6:54 remaining with assists going to Kyler Moore and Flicek. Flicek soon followed with his first goal of the game with 1:45 on the clock off a Drew Lenertz feed, sending UMary into the second intermission leading 3-0.

UND got on the board with 7:08 left in the game, cutting the UMary lead to 3-1. The Marauders quickly responded less than three minutes later as Logan Kraft tallied with help from Peter Pavek and Lenertz.

Flicek finished off his big game with his second goal of the game from assists by Jakob Parisien and Marshall Tschida with 2:35 remaining in the contest, sealing the UMary win.

Bryan Bresina was stellar in goal for North Dakota, stopping 46 Marauders shots.

The Marauders and UND complete their weekend series at 9:30 am Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Icon Sports Arena in Grand Forks, ND.
