Paddle Trophy eludes Marauders grip in loss to Dragons

BISMARCK, ND – For the second straight week, freshman running back Bryan Lumsden found the end zone twice for the University of Mary. The two scores weren't enough for the Marauders to regain the Paddle Trophy as visiting MSU Moorhead won the 13th Battle for the Paddle 48-20.

Lumsden carried eight time for 81 yards. He scored on a 37 yard burst in the third quarter and posted the final points of the night on an 8 yard run late in the game.

The Marauders defense thwarted the Dragons first offensive foray as Jarad Zittleman picked off a pass at the Marauders 12 yard line.

Unable to gain a first down, UMary was forced to punt with MSUM taking over at the Marauders 47 yard line. The Dragons drove 47 yards for the opening score, a Jakup Sinani 14 yard run with 5:02 left in the opening quarter. MSUM added second touchdown in the first quarter to build a 14-0 lead.

After MSUM increased its lead to 21-0 in the second quarter, Kendall Grier stopped the visitors next drive with an interception at the Marauders 11 yard line, followed by a 15 yard return.

The Marauders opened the second half scoring with a perfectly executed pass play off a lateral. Off the snap, Jason Hoekstra threw a lateral to Garrett Weissinger on the right sideline in front of the Marauders bench. Weissinger then found freshman Chase Kopp wide open well past the closest defender. After hauling in the pass, Kopp turned on the afterburners to outrace the Dragons defenders to the end zone to complete a 59 yard scoring pass and pulling UMary within 28-7 at 12:32 of the third quarter.

The Dragons responded with a score of their own and the Marauders looked to immediately respond. Driving to the MSUM 19 with hopes of reducing the deficit, UMary instead turned the ball over on downs.

Both squads each tallied once more in the third. After the Dragons crossed the goal line again, the Marauders scored on the Lumsden 37 yard run with 2:06 left in the quarter to make the score 41-13.

Just as in the third, the two teams also played even in the fourth quarter with each squad scoring once.

Freshman running back Reggie Scott added 40 yards rushing for the Marauders. Colton Farmer chipped in 30 and Weissinger 28. Overall UMary produced 142 yards rushing.

Kopp led UMary with 71 yards receiving on three catches.

DeShawn Gay had a busy day on returns, hauling back seven kicks for 177 yards, an average of over 25 yards/attempt with a long of 35 yards.

Cyrano Rayfield had a game-high 10 tackles and Jackson Grad added nine. Devin Sardelli added two tackles for loss, including a sack. Zittleman added a breakup and eight tackles to his interception.

Sinani threw for 272 yards and three scores while also running for 40 yards and two scores for MSUM. Zach Sweep caught two touchdown passes. Darius Woods-Steichen paced MSUM with two sacks.

The Marauders remain at home and will host Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, Sept. 29. Game time is 2 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
