Home opener on final weekend of the season for Marauders spoiled by Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – Making their home debut on the final week of the season, senior pitcher Trevor Zacher led the University of Mary baseball team to extra innings in the opener but the Marauders were unable to hold off the Northern Sun-leading Minot State University. The Beavers captured the first game 4-2 in eight innings before completing the sweep over the Marauders 6-3 in game two.

Unseasonable weather forced the Marauders to move all their previously scheduled home contests to other locations this spring.

GAME 1 Minot State University 4 University of Mary 2
Making his final collegiate start, senior Trevor Zacher shut down a potent Minot State offense, limiting the Beavers to four hits and two runs in seven innings while striking out six. Both Beavers runs off the Beulah, ND, native came in the second inning on a 2-run home run to right field by Celastino Rodriguez. Gaining strength as the game continued, Zacher retired the last seven hitters he faced. The last hit he allowed was a ground ball single in the fourth inning.

The Marauders scored single runs in the third and fourth innings on a run-scoring hit by Seth Siverson and a solo home run to right center by Travis Stevens.

UMary left a pair of runners aboard in the sixth and one in the seventh.

PIVOT POINT
Held without a hit for three straight innings, the Beavers broke through with a one-out single in the eighth. A second straight hit placed both runners in scoring position and both would eventually scored, the first on a wild pitch and the second on an infield error.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Zacher went a career-high seven innings, striking out six, allowing two runs, walking three and giving up four hits.

Siverson had two hits and an RBI in the game, the only UMary player with multiple hits.

Stevens was officially 1-for-1 with a home run, an RBI, a run scored, walked and had a sacrifice hit.

Chris Scott had a single and scored a run.

Celestino Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs.

Justin Demary picked up the win for MSU, striking out eight in 7.2 innings. He allowed five hits, a walk and two runs.

STAT OF THE GAME
Zacher and Charles Bielejeski combined to strike out nine Minot State hitters, a staff high this season.

GAME 2 Minot State 6 UMary 3
Once again forced to fight from behind, the Marauders pulled within a run but could never catch the Beavers. UMary pulled within 2-1 and 4-3 but couldn't find a way to take the lead.

PIVOT POINT
After the Marauders scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Scott and a Nick McCann sacrifice fly to pull within 4-3, the Beavers immediately responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Michael Borst hit a run-scoring triple to the right center wall and Rodriguez  followed with an RBI double to deep center field for a 6-3 MSU lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Six different Marauders had hits in the game.

Ian Fisher pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Andres Hackman game up two earned runs and struck out five in 6.2 innings.

Rodriguez had two hits and two RBIs. Borst had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

STAT OF THE GAME
Isaac Saad, Andrew Brooks and Fisher combined to allow just one walk in the game. The only other time UMary has walked that few hitters in a single game this season was the win over Valley City State earlier in the week.
