Late heroics by McCann, Scott lead Marauders to wild split with Beavers

BEMIDJI, MN – Late-inning heroics by Nick McCann and Chris Scott lifted the University of Mary to a doubleheader split at Bemidji State University on a day both teams rallied for big wins. The homestanding Beavers captured the opener 10-9 before McCann recorded the game-winning hit and Scott struck out the side in the last inning of a 9-7 UMary victory.

Trailing 9-3 entering the home half of the sixth inning in a game scheduled for seven, the Beavers erupted for seven runs to rally past the Marauders 10-9. The Marauders had scored six times in the third to take a 7-1 lead and added two more in the fifth but couldn't hold off the hard-charging Beavers.
 
PIVOT POINT
After loading the bases with two outs, the Beavers used a bases-loaded walk, a three-run double, a two-run double and an RBI single to score seven runs and take the lead. UMary used four different pitchers in the inning. UMary then went down in order in the top of the seventh.   
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Darius Barlas was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
 
Travis Stevens was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He also retired the only batter he faced in relief.
 
Jaxon Ford was 2-for-3 with his first collegiate home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
 
Cody Fourre scored twice.
 
Scott Litchy finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The top three hitters in the BSU lineup combined for six hits, six runs and eight RBIs.

In a reversal of the opener, it was the Marauders that rallied from an early deficit to fight back for the win. Down 5-0 and 6-1, UMary scored five times in the sixth to tie the game. After both teams scored in the eighth, the Marauders posted a pair of runs in the ninth to gain the win.   
 
PIVOT POINT
Three straight singles plus a wild pitch allowed the Marauders to score twice in the ninth inning. With one out, Chris Scott and Darius Barlas each singled and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Nick McCann followed with a single to center to score both runs.
 
Looking for his second save in three days, Scott then struck out all three hitters he faced in the ninth to preserve the Marauders win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Barlus was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. He also stole a base.
 
Scot went 2-for-4 and scored twice. He struck out three hitters in a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the season.
 
McCann was 1-for-3 with a steal, a run scored and three runs batted in.
 
Ford drove in two runs and had his team-leading 13th steal.
 
Andrew Brooks pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run.
 
Kenny Slominski gave up a hit in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
 
Colin Gudereit picked up his first Marauders win after allowing one hit and one run in 1.1 innings of work out of the pen.
 
Litchy hit his 8th home run of the season for BSU.
 
Matt Kummet had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for BSU.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
UMary pitchers gave up just two walks while BSU issued eight bases on balls to offset the Beavers 12-9 edge in hits. Both teams hit three batters.
 
ON DECK
After a weekend off, the Marauders play a single non-conference game at Valley City State University on May 1 before hosting Minot State University in the season finale on May 4-5.
