Early missteps haunt Marauders in losses to #8 Warriors

BISMARCK, ND – Early missteps in both games by the University of Mary softball proved costly against 8th ranked Winona State University as the Warriors posted 7-0 and 8-0 wins over the Marauders on Senior Day.

GAME 1 Winona State University 7 University of Mary 0
A pair of first inning runs were all Warriors pitcher Jordyn Kleman needed. The Winona State pitcher struck out six and allowed just four hits and a walk to win her 14th game in 15 decisions. WSU made use of ten hits and seven walks.

PIVOT POINT
After UMary's Brieann Backes walked the first two batters of the game, she followed with two strikeouts. Nearly out of the inning, Backes allowed a single up the middle to McKenna Larsen. Katelyn Kolb scored from second and a bobble in the outfield opened the window for Mariah Schultz to score from first for a 2-0 lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Marauders honored their three seniors – Colleen Crutchfield, Madison McGonigal and Keegan Wickman – between games.

Backes allowed just two earned runs in five innings, walking six and striking out seven.

Freshman Lauren Lunt had two of the Marauders four hits.

Rylee Stout had three hits for WSU and two RBIs. Larsen added two hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Schultz had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Marauders had just one baserunner through the first five innings.

GAME 2 Winona State 8 UMary 0
The Warriors scored four times in the first inning – all unearned – and twice in the second inning to pull away from the Marauders early. The run support was more than enough for Larsen, who limited the Marauders to three hits. She struck out six, didn't walk anyone and retired the final ten UMary batters she faced to close out the game.

PIVOT POINT
With two outs and the bases full in the top of the first inning, a ground ball to the left side of the Marauders infield was misplayed, allowing two runs to score. With two more runners in scoring position, Jen Giesey doubled to left to drive home two more runs for a 4-0 Warriors lead.
