SANFORD, FL –
Jesus Payan had three hits and drove in two runs for the University of Mary and
Travis Stevens and
Chris Scott both added a pair of hits for the Marauders in an 18-8 loss to Embry-Riddle.
The Marauders totaled 11 hits but couldn't keep pace with the Eagles. ERAU produced 18 hits, including six extra base hits that featured two home runs. The lone extra base hit for the Marauders was a Payan double.
The Eagles started fast, scoring five runs in the top of the first. Fighting back immediately, UMary posted four runs in the bottom of the first to close within 5-4. Scoring all their runs with two outs,
Darius Barlas,
Chris Scott and
Nick McCann all singled home runs. Scott scored the fourth run when he crossed the plate prior to McCann getting tagged out on a designed run-down play.
Soon trailing 7-4, 2-run
Chris Scott single in the third inning closed the deficit to 7-6.
Continuing to fight from behind as the deficit widened, the Marauders scored their final two runs of the night on a 2-run double by Payan in the seventh to close within 12-8.
A junior college transfer, Payan posted his first 3-hit game for the Marauders. He scored once and drove in two runs. Stevens finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Scott drove in two runs and scored once.
Seth Siverson crossed the plate twice.
Kyle Guttveg led the Embrey-Riddle attack, finishing 4-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBIs. He doubled twice.
After wrapping up their ten-game swing through central Florida, the Marauders are set to open their Northern Sun schedule at Wayne State College on March 17-18.
