Marauders outhit Bulldogs but miscues prove costly as UMD sweeps UMary

DULUTH, MN – Jesus Payan pounded out four hits in a single game for the second time this season and Trevor Zacher and Austin Ell combined on a 3-hitter for the University of Mary but the homestanding University of Minnesota Duluth claimed both ends of the Northern Sun doubleheader 10-3 and 5-2.
 
The Marauders held a 17-12 edge in hits but UMary committed seven errors and walked 12 batters in the two games while UMD made just one error and walked four.

Jesus Payan had two doubles and four hits total for UMary but timely hitting and the ability to take advantage of the Marauders miscues led the Bulldogs to a win in their home opener.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Bulldogs opened quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning behind two walks, a run-scoring double and a run-scoring single. Minnesota Duluth put the game away with four more runs – all unearned – in the fourth to build an insurmountable 8-1 lead. UMD had just one hit in the inning as UMary committed two errors and walked a pair.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Payan finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. The pair of doubles was a new career-high.
 
The Marauders outhit the Bulldogs 10-9.
 
Jaxon Ford finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
After the game, Jesus Payan's batting average for the season sat at .457.

Trevor Zacher and Austin Ell combined to allow just three hits in eight innings, a season low for the Marauders. Four errors marred the outing, however, as four of the five Bulldogs runs scored in the game were unearned.
 
PIVOT POINT
After scoring two unearned runs in the third on a walk and an error, the Bulldogs doubled their advantage with a 2-run home run by Alex Welder. It was the first hit of the game allowed in the game by Zacher.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior righthander Trevor Zacher, making his second career start after playing four years of college basketball, including the last two with the Marauders, allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings. He struck out seven and walked four.
 
Senior lefty Austin Ell allowed one hit and two walks during two scoreless innings.
 
Chris Scott finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The junior left fielder drove in both Marauders runs with a single in the ninth inning.
 
Charles Bielejeski, a junior right-handed pitcher for the Marauders, scored his first collegiate run when he pinch ran for Jesus Payan in the ninth inning.
 
Welder finished 2-for-2 with the 2-run home run for the Bulldogs.
 
Colin Baumgard pitched eight shutout innings to earn the win for UMD, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The Marauders out-hit the Bulldogs 7-3 in the game and 17-12 in the doubleheader, though UMD had the only two extra base hits in game two.
 
ON DECK
Forced to move what was to be the Marauders home opener due to unplayable field conditions, UMary and Minnesota State will play a four-game set in St. Peter, MN, at the Gustavus Adolphus field on Thursday and Friday, March 29-30. Both NSIC doubleheaders will begin at 9 am.
