SIOUX FALLS, SD – On a night of two distinctly different halves, the University of Mary women's basketball claimed the first half but dropped off the pace in the second as the University of Sioux Falls rallied for a 60-50 home win in the opening round of the 2018 Northern Sun / Sanford Health women' s basketball tournament.
Behind another powerful performance by
Gabbie Bohl, the Marauders outscored the Cougars 15-8 in the opening quarter after
Jordyn Jossart and CassieNoen drained treys on UMary's final two possessions of the stanza.
Growing their advantage to as many as 11 points, the Marauders entered intermission leading 28-20 behind 12 first-half points from Bohl as USF shot just 21 percent over the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Cougars pounced on the Marauders in the third as Sioux Falls outscored UMary 16-10. Using a 19-1 run that started late in the third, the Cougars moved in front 49-39 and held the lead the remainder of the game.
UMary had one more run remaining, pulling within 55-50 in the final minute of play but the rally proved to be too late.
Bohl had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Marauders, both game highs.
Lauren Rotunda had ten points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Macy Williams finished her freshman season with nine points and
Cassie Askvig added six points, six rebounds and three assists.
Kaely Hummel and Mariah Szymanski both had 20 points for USF.
The Cougars went 17-for-25 at the free throw line while the Marauders were 4-for-6.
UMary finishes the season 13-16 overall. Sioux Falls is 15-12.
