MANDAN, ND – University of Mary forward
Alex Flicek scored just 65 seconds into the Marauders first-ever meeting with the University of Jamestown, stunning the visiting Jimmies. The early blow only staggered Jamestown, however, as the Jimmies tallied twice in the second period to rally past UMary 3-1. The loss was the first-ever for the Marauders on their home ice in 14 games at Schwan Cadillac Arena in the Starion Sports Complex.
The Marauders, ranked first in the ACHA Division II West region, opened the scoring on Flicek's hot hand. The forward from Bismarck, ND, took a feed from
Jonathan Sundell and scored his team-high 28
th goal of the season at 1:05 of the opening period. He has found the net five times in his last three games. UMary then nearly doubled its advantage late in the opening period on a hard shot that rang off the pipe before entering the first intermission with a one goal lead.
The Jimmies, ranked 17
th overall in the nation in ACHA Division I, evened the contest 4:50 into the second period. Looking like the game would enter the second intermission in a tie, Jamestown snuck in a goal by Cole McKechney with 20 seconds remaining to grab a 2-1 lead.
Jamestown put the game out of reach at 3-1 when Joshua Stephens found the net at the 7:25 mark of the third period.
Neither team found success with a man advantage as both squads were 0-for-4 on the power play. Both teams were cited for seven infractions totaling 14 minutes.
UMary fired 18 shots on the Jamestown net while the Jimmies more than doubled the Marauders, taking 37 shots against
Aaron Nelson, who stopped 34 shots total. It was the second-most saves the Marauders goaltender has made this season.
The Marauders, now 26-3-2 on the season overall and 12-1-1 at home, continue their three-game home stand this weekend against the University of St. Thomas. The Marauders and the Tommies first meet on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 pm in UMary's Teddy Bear Toss game. The two-game series concludes at 2 pm on Saturday, Dec. 15.
