BOTTINEAU, ND – Remaining undefeated against teams from North Dakota, the University of Mary hockey team picked up a rugged 3-2 road win over the Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks. Both teams connected for a pair of power plays in the first of a home-and-home series between the two teams.
The second half of the two-game set between the Marauders (18-1-0) and the Lumberjacks is scheduled for 7 pm Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Schwan Cadillac Arena at Starion Sports Complex.
UMary struck first when Benjamin Kottmeier converted a power play at 15:26 of the opening period, using assists from
Jakob Parisien and
Drew Lenertz.
Cyril Nagurski doubled the Marauders lead to 2-0 at 3:49 of the second period when he took a feed from
Zachery Garrett and Lenertz to post the lone even strength goal of the night. Parisien extended the Marauders advantage to 3-0 at 13:10 with Lenertz picking up his third assist of the night and
Marshall Tschida his first.
Looking to defend their home ice, the Lumberjacks took advantage of a Marauders penalty late in the second period. Just five seconds into a power play, Bailey Robertson scored 1:23 before intermission. Wynter Cyr converted another power play opportunity at 9:56 of the final period.
Standing tall in goal,
Lance Knudson shut the door on the Lumberjacks and helped deny Dakota College on one more power play with just under five minutes left in the game.
Dakota College increased the pressure on the Marauders net as the night went on. After posting nine shots in the first period, the Lumberjacks took 11 in the second and 15 in the third.
Knudson finished with 33 saves for the Marauders. Jay Pringle had 28 saves for the Lumberjacks.
UMary was whistled for nine penalties totaling 18 minutes. Dakota College was called for seven infractions and 14 minutes. The Marauders converted 2-of-4 power play opportunities while the Lumberjacks connected on two of six opportunities.
