MANDAN, ND – A night after barely escaping the home of Dakota College at Bottineau with a narrow one goal victory, the University of Mary hockey team comfortably claimed a 6-1 win over the Lumberjacks on the Marauders home ice.
On Friday the Marauders scored the first three goals of the game and held on to a 3-2 win. Tonight the Marauders kept building their advantage and only allowed a goal in the closing moments of the contest, despite providing the Lumberjacks seven power play opportunities.
Josh Colleaux and
Drew Lenertz provided the scoring for the Marauders as both tallied twice.
Zachery Garrett had a goal and three assists and
Ben Kottmeier both posted three assists.
Garrett put the Marauders on the board first, scoring a power play goal at 11:16 of the first period. Just 39 seconds later Colleaux doubled the Marauders advantage with an even strength tally.
UMary continued to electrify the crowd with two more goals in the first period as both Lenertz and
Marshall Tschida found the net to provide a 4-0 lead for the Marauders entering the first intermission.
Colleaux and Lenertz added to the goal parade in the second, providing a 6-0 lead for UMary. The Lenertz goal was the second UMary power play conversion of the evening.
The Marauders defense finally caved in the third. Down two skaters due to penalties, Wade Thompson scored for the Lumberjacks on the 5-on-3 advantage with 1:54 left in the game.
UMary dominated the shot chart, unleashing 46 shots to just 18 for the Lumberjacks. Dakota College held the shot lead in the series opener. The Marauders were 2-for-4 on the power play while the Lumberjacks finished 1-for-7.
Aaron Nelson picked up the win in net for the Marauders, stopping 17 of the 18 shots he faced. His record improves to 10-1 on the season.
The Marauders, now 19-1 in their inaugural year, have another home-and-home series next weekend with Williston State College. The Marauders host WSC on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 pm. Saturday's game is slated for 7 pm in Watford City, ND.
