LOGAN, UT – Coming off a pair of close victories to open the Beehive Showcase in Utah, the University of Mary hockey team changed course and jumped out to an early lead and skated off with an impressive 5-1 victory over Northern Arizona University.
Ranked first in the West region in their inaugural season of play, the Marauders knocked off the 4
th ranked Lumberjacks for the second time this year. UMary defeated NAU 3-2 at home on Sept. 28.
After the Marauders had found themselves tied in the second period the previous two days, UMary opened the scoring and built an insurmountable lead early in the game.
Alex Flicek scored his team-high 22
nd goal in 25 games at the 6:34 mark. UMary then doubled its lead when
Kyler Moore found the net at 13:49.
Scoring a goal for the third straight game, defenseman
Marshall Tschida stunned the Lumberjacks just 42 seconds into the second period to increase the Marauders lead to 3-0.
Northern Arizona finally found the net 45 seconds into the third period but it was the last time for the night. Zach Garett pushed the Marauders lead back to three goals at 4-1 halfway through the final period before
Josh Colleaux sealed the Marauders ninth straight win and 24
th in 25 games with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 13:48. It was the only non-even strength goal scored in the game.
Outshot in the first period 11-10, the Marauders turned up the defense in front of
Aaron Nelson, who stopped 25 shots for the game. UMary outshot NAU 34-26.
Neither team could generate a goal on the power play despite numerous attempts with a man advantage. The Marauders were 0-for-7 and the Lumberjacks went 0-for-6.
Tschida, Flicek and Colleaux all had a goal and an assist in the game.
The Marauders wrap up the Beehive Showcase on Sunday, Nov. 18, against Grand Canyon University, ranked 13
th in the West region.
