PROVO, UT – A second period three-goal explosion allowed the University of Mary hockey team – ranked first in the West region - to dispatch homestanding and 14
th ranked Brigham Young University 4-2 as four different players tallied for the Marauders. The first of four games in four days against ranked teams in the Beehive Tournament, UMary improved to 22-1 on the season and remain undefeated against teams in the West.
Philip Silveria opened the scoring for the Marauders at 7:52 of the opening period before the Cougars knotted the game late in the first.
Kyler Moore regained the Marauders advantage just 54 seconds into the second period but once again the Cougars found a way to pull even at 2-2 at the 4:42 mark.
The rest of the game belonged to the Marauders.
Alex Flicek scored his team-leading 21
st goal of the season at 10:46 to break the tie. UMary doubled its advantage to 4-2 at the 17:41 mark when
Marshall Tschida, who had assists on the first two goals of the second period, found the net himself off a Zach Garrett feed.
The Marauders then turned the game over to their defense and goalkeepers
Aaron Nelson and
Lance Knudson. Nelson posted and 19 saves in the game before Knudson came on early in the third and stopped all ten shots he faced in just over 15 minutes in net.
Flicek, who posted his fifth game-winning goal of the season, also had an assist in the game. Additionally Moore paired an assist with his goal.
With his two assists and a goal in the game, Tschida leads the Marauders with 25 helpers on the season and is tied with Flicek and
Zachery Garrett 30 points.
UMary held a 36-31 advantage in shots despite BYU having a 12-10 edge in the third period.
The penalty kill unit for the Marauders proved stellar, holding the Cougars to one power play goal in six chances. UMary had just two opportunities with a man advantage and couldn't capitalize.
The Marauders next face #12 Cal State Northridge at 5 pm CST/4 pm MT in Ogden, UT.
