MANDAN, ND – Playing for the first time as the ACHA Division II West region's top-ranked team, the University of Mary hockey team used a pair of goals by
Alex Flicek and another impressive defensive effort to down Williston State College 3-1. The Marauders scored a single goal in each period to win their 20
th game in 21 outings.
The first of two weekend games in a home-and-home series, the Marauders scored first when Flicek posted an unassisted goal at 13:57 of the opening period.
Flicek doubled the Marauders advantage with his 20
th goal of the season at 4:33 of the second period. Taking a feed from
Jakob Parisien, Flicek converted UMary's only power play goal of the night out of seven opportunities.
The Tetons finally dented the Marauders defense in the second period when Garrett Freeman pulled Williston State within 2-1 with six minutes left to play. UMary got the goal back with 36 seconds left to play when
Ben Kottmeier scored an empty net goal with assists to
Zachery Garrett and
Drew Lenertz.
Aaron Nelson posted another impressive performance, stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced on the night.
The weekend Marauders-Tetons series concludes with a neutral site game in Watford City, ND, on Saturday, Nov. 10, hosted by Williston State College. Face off is 7 pm.
