Early goals propel Marauders past Peacocks for fourth straight win

BISMARCK, ND – A red-hot University of Mary women's soccer team used a pair of first half goals to roll to their fourth straight win and move up one more slot in the Northern Sun standings. A 2-0 victory over visiting Upper Iowa University pushed the Marauders into seventh place in the league standings with two games remaining.

Sitting 13th in the league before the start of this current run, the Marauders improved their season record to 7-6-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the NSIC for 20 points. Entering the final weekend of the season, St. Cloud State is fourth with 24 points, Minot State (23 points) is fifth, Concordia-St. Paul (21) sits in sixth place with the Marauders (20) in seventh. There is a three-way tie for eighth between Northern State, Winona State and Minnesota Duluth.

UMary concludes the season with a visit to Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Oct. 26, before closing out the regular season at home with a visit from St. Cloud State on Sunday, Oct. 28. Game time for the SCSU match is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.

Knowing a chance to continue to rise in the conference standings was a distinct possibility with a win, the Marauders came out flying, directing an early shot towards the Peacocks net and a pair of corner kicks before Upper Iowa had a chance to take a shot of their own.

Countering the first offensive attack of the game by the Peacocks, the Marauders direct attack resulted in the opening goal of the game in the 20th minute. Sidney Burrell and Megan Lowery both played the ball forward to Caylin Cathey. With Peacocks goalkeeper Natalie Rudrud charging out of the net to challenge the shot, Cathey kept the ball low and slid it past the keeper for her seventh goal of the season, a career high.

The Peacocks responded with a couple more corner attempts and three shots but Marauders goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman made a save to preserve the UMary lead.

The Marauders doubled their advantage on a tremendous hustle play by Sidney Burrell. Tiffany Ohlhauser sent in a long, high pass from midfield towards the Peacocks goal. Rudrud came far out of the net in hopes of snaring the ball but Burrell arrived first, blowing past a Peacocks defender to get her head on the ball and direct it into the net for her second goal of the season.

UMary dominated Upper Iowa (3-11-2 / 2-9-2) the rest of the game. The Marauders held an 11-6 edge in shots ( 5-3 in shots on frame) and had a massive 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Waltman registered her sixth clean sheet of the season and her third in four games. She made three saves in the contest.
