ESTERO, FL – in round two between the young upstart and the established power, defending ACHA Division II national champion Florida Gulf Coast University took a modicum of revenge after the University of Mary won the opener between the two the night prior. In a back-and-forth contest with both teams holding leads, it was the Eagles rallying for a 4-2 victory over the visiting Marauders behind a trio of power play goals.
The loss is the first ever for the Marauders in their inaugural season after winning their first 15 games, including a 2-0 defeat of the Eagles to open the two-game set.
The Eagles opened the scoring with a single goal in the first period when David Wong converted on a power play at 5:28.
The Marauders exploded for a pair of goals in the second period. Just eight seconds after both teams took a penalty,
Alex Flicek scored his 16
th goal of the season at 15:04. Jakob Parisian provided the Marauders a 2-1 lead at the 8:00 mark. It was his fifth counter of the year.
Just as the Marauders controlled the scoring in the second period, the Eagles did the same in the third. Taking advantage of UMary penalties, FGCU posted power play goals by Shawn O'Meara at 10:32 and Trevor Mullaly at 8:57. The Eagles soon closed the lid on any attempted Marauders comeback with an empty net goal with 29 seconds left in the game.
The Marauders look to begin a new winning streak when UMary returns home to host the University of Colorado on Oct. 26-27 at the Schwan Cadillac Arena at Starion Sports Complex. Game time is 7 pm both nights.
