Fast start keeps Marauders perfect on season after 6-2 win over Montana State

MANDAN, ND – Lightning-quick strikes to start both the first and second periods propelled the University of Mary hockey team to a 6-2 win over Montana State University in ACHA Division II hockey. The Marauders scored 33 seconds into the opening period and then took only 25 seconds to start the scoring in the second period. UMary remains perfect in their inaugural season with the program's 13th straight win.

Starting the evening on a power play due to a bench minor on Montana State due to an improper lineup, the Marauders wasted no time grabbing an immediately lead. Taking a feed from Drew Lenertz and Marshall Tschida, Andrew Huber drove the puck into the net just 33 seconds into the night to give UMary a 1-0 lead and a lead that was never relinquished.

Continuing to apply pressure the Marauders doubled their advantage five minutes later when Kyler Moore scored the first of his two goals of the night.

As fast as the Marauders scored in the first period, they outdid themselves in the second. Zachery Garrett, with help from Ben Kottmeier and Huber, raced in to score a goal just 25 seconds into the second period.

UMary continued to roll with Moore converting a power play opportunity at 5:53 and Josh Colleaux building the Marauders lead to 5-0 less than halfway through the second period.

Montana State followed with a pair of goals just 3:14 apart at 11:00 and 14:14 of the second to close within 5-2 but the Bobcats would get no closer.

Despite being outshot 10-6 in the 3rd period, Aaron Nelson stood firm in goal, holding the Bobcats at bay while Kottmeier completed the scoring with a goal at 10:07.

In a penalty-filled game, Nelson finished with 31 saves and allowed the Bobcats to convert 1-of-7 power play opportunities. Charlie Lafferty posted 27 stops for MSU and was scored on in two of UMary's five opportunities with a man advantage.

The Marauders served 14 minutes in the penalty box on seven citations while the Bobcats served 10 minutes for five penalties.

UMary concludes its homecoming twin bill with Montana State University on Sunday, Oct. 14. Faceoff is 2 pm at the Schwan Cadillac Arena at Starion Sports Complex.
