BISMARCK, ND –
Gabbie Bohl scored 25 points and claimed nine rebounds and a dominant third quarter ensured a weekend sweep for the University of Mary women's basketball team as the Marauders defeated visiting Winona State University 81-64. The win extends the Marauders home winning streak to four games and five out of six overall.
With the Marauders recent surge, UMary is 7-9 in the Northern Sun and 11-11 overall. The Marauders, currently in sixth place in the NSIC North, are just two wins behind third place St. Cloud State as the Huskies lost twice during the weekend. The Warriors are 13-7 and 9-7.
Down at intermission 40-38, the Marauders used a lock-down defense and a barrage of 3-pointers to take control of the game.
Dani Williams connected behind the arc for the first points of the second half and push UMary in front 41-40, and the Marauders remained in the lead the rest of the day. Soon leading 46-44, UMary scored eleven straight points that included three treys.
Bohl started the Marauders roll with a layup, followed by a Williams 3-pointer.
Lauren Rotunda then drained consecutive 3-pointers as UMary hit four straight shots to build a 57-44 lead. The Marauders outscored the Warriors 21-6 in the third behind five treys in eight attempts.
UMary's lead eventually grew to 18 points after another Rotunda three. Refusing to concede, Winona State closed within nine points before the Marauders scored the last eight points of the game, all from the free throw line in the final three minutes.
Bohl just missed a double double with 25 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore forward made 9-of-14 shots from the field and all seven free throws.
Cassie Askvig recorded her seventh double double of the season, pairing 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also had five assists and three blocks.
Rotunda, 3-for-4 behind the arc, scored 12 points and added six rebounds and three assists.
Macy Williams chipped in ten points and seven assists as she converted 4-of-5 shots.
Dani Williams added nine points, making three treys.
Christal Hearn scored a career-high 11 points off the bench, connecting on 4-of-6 field goals. She led the team with two steals.
Hannah McGlone led Winona State with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Allie Pickrain also added 14 points.
The Marauders shot 49 percent for the game overall, including an 11-for-27 effort behind the arc. The Warriors shot just 40 percent, making 5-of-14 3-point attempts.
UMary begins a four-game road trip at Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State on February 2-3.
