BISMARCK, ND –
Lauren Randall hit her way to a major career milestone and propelled the University of Mary volleyball team to victory in the Marauders home opener. Playing in front of raucous home crowd of over 600, Randall reached 1,000 career kills in UMary's 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19) over Valley City State University in a non-conference contest.
Randall continued her overpowering play with 17 kills against the Vikings. The lone UMary player to reach double digits in the game, the senior from Burnsville, MN, now has 1,001 kills in her career. She is just the second Marauders player to reach that figure during the program's NCAA era. Since the Marauders began competing in NCAA Division II in 2006, the only other UMary player to reach quadruple digits in kills is Laci Murtha with 1,057 from 2007-10.
Amanda Lopes posted a double double in her Marauders home debut, distributing 28 assists and making 12 digs to go with three aces. The junior setter also had seven kills. Freshman
Morgan Schnabel also had seven kills.
Geovana Almeida had 14 digs, eight assists and three aces. Freshman
Jody Heidel added ten digs.
Megan Johnson led VCSU with 11 kills. Leah Ruter had 26 assists.
A close contest throughout the night, Randall broke a 19-19 tie with a kill off an assist by Lopes. Kills by Lopes and Rachel Vargas-Comme finished off the Vikings in the 25-20 opening set win for the Marauders.
Never leading until taking a 21-20 on a Clarissa Olson ace, the Vikings pulled even with a 27-25 win in the second set.
The Marauders started slow in the third, trailing by as many as four points at 12-8. Continuing to grind away, though, UMary grabbed the lead for good at 17-16. Randall pushed the Marauders forward to 24-20 on back-to-back kills before
Freddie Campbell terminated the final point in the 25-22 third set win for UMary.
The momentum continued into the fourth set for UMary, racing out to an 18-11 lead on four early Randall kills. The Vikings rallied to 19-16 but pulled no closer as Campbell and Randall each had two kills among Mary's final six points.
The Marauders improve to 3-2 on the season while the Vikings are 4-5.
UMary returns to action this weekend with four games at the Keneenaw Classic in Houghton, MI.
