Big plays, turnovers stiffle Marauders in loss to Peacocks

FAYETTE, IA – The University of Mary scored the first and last touchdowns of the game but Upper Iowa University owned the middle. The Marauders committed five turnovers and couldn't slow a big play Peacocks offense in a 58-14 UMary road loss to UIU in the Northern Sun Thursday Night Game of the Week.

Down 3-0 after the Peacocks produced a field goal on the first possession of the game, the Marauders struck quickly the first time they touched the ball. On the first play of the game, Colton Farmer just missed a wide open Sam Mackedanz breaking open downfield. Two plays later, Farmer took another shot downfield and this time connected with a wide open Tyson Carney. Beyond the Peacocks defenders when he caught the ball, the Marauders redshirt freshman receiver raced 56 yards for his first collegiate touchdown. Cody Goetz connected on the extra point and UMary had its first lead of the season at 7-3.

The lead lasted two plays. After the Peacocks gained 1 yard to start the drive, Brent Lammers hit Keagan Pinter for a 74 yard touchdown pass to retake the lead at 10-7.

Jarad Zittleman halted the next Peacocks possession with his first collegiate interception. Not deterred, Upper Iowa followed with touchdowns on three of the Peacocks next four possessions. Two of the touchdowns were scoring strikes of 46 and 37 yards to Jarred Edmonds, who caught three scoring passes against the Marauders two years ago.

Up 31-7 at intermission, the Peacocks added another 20 points in the third. Their run of 55 straight points ended on a 52-yard fumble return by Beau Sorenson.

The Marauders seemed to return to the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter when Garrett Weissinger sprinted 65 yards for an apparent touchdown. Emblematic of the night, however, the play was ruled dead after a 10 yard gain due to an inadvertent whistle. An official blew the play dead after believing the Marauders fullback had the ball. In actuality the ball had remained in Weissinger's possession the entire play.

Devin Hope provided the Marauders final points of the game when he rolled into the end zone from 12 yards out with 4:59 remaining in the game. Hope carried five times for 32 of the 68 yards churned out by the Marauders on the scoring drive.

Hope led the Marauders with 92 yards rushing and one touchdown. Farmer added 28 yards rushing and 62 passing. Carney caught two passes for 62 yards and a score.

Daniel Hudrlik led the Marauders with six solo and eight total tackles. He also broke up two passes. Pat O'Connell had seven tackles – including one for loss. Zittleman posted six stops – one for loss – and intercepted a pass.

Bailey Meyer downed four of his five punts inside the UIU 20 yard line. He averaged 37.6 yards per attempt with a long of 47.

Lammers completed 15-of-22 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 37 yards and two scores. Edmonds had eight catches for 160 yards and two scores. Ryan Parmley ran for 121 yards and one score.

The Marauders (0-4 overall, 0-4 NSIC) rolled up 240 yards rushing and totaled 302 yards of offense. The Peacocks (3-1, 3-1) gained 548 yards, including 260 on the ground.

After its longest road trip of the season on the shortest week, the Marauders return home to host Minot State University at 2:30 pm on Saturday, Sept. 30.
