MINOT, ND – Roaring back after narrowly losing the opening set, the University of Mary volleyball team used a big night from
Lauren Randall to defeat Minot State University 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 25-16). The road win is the first Northern Sun victory of the season for the Marauders.
The NSIC leader in kills per set, Randall exceeded her season average in the UMary win over their instate rival. Randall posted 26 kills in the four sets, nearly half the Marauders team total of 57. The senior outside hitter averaged just under five kills per set entering the night.
As a team UMary hit a solid .221 for the night with a pair of seniors leading the way.
Freddie Campbell finished with a .312 attack percentage, just ahead of Randall's .310. Campbell posted six kills and just one hitting error.
Randall posted her sixth double double in the past seven games, adding 11 digs to her 26 kills. She also had two solo blocks. A pair of freshmen also had double digits in digs;
Jody Heidel had 14 and
Natalia Cruz posted 17. Cruz also had seven kills.
Amanda Lopes directed the Marauders offense to their second-best hitting percentage of the season, dishing out 43 assists.
Katelyn Olson added seven kills and six assists.
Emily Falldorf and Jeanne Brenner led Minot State with 10 kills each.
Not nearly as efficient offensively as the Marauders (5-7 overall, 1-2 NSIC), the Beavers (3-8, 0-3) posted an attack percentage of .094. MSU did outperform UMary in blocks 13-7.
The Marauders suffered a tough loss in the opening set. With UMary holding a 23-18 lead, the Beavers scored eight of the last nine points to rally and take the first set 26-24.
Shaking off their disappointment, the Marauders finished the second set on an 8-3 run to claim the set 25-18 and tie the match at 1-1 entering intermission.
The momentum continued in the third set as UMary jumped out to a 22-11 lead. The fourth and final set followed a similar fashion as the Marauders held a 21-11 advantage.
The Marauders continue their four-game road trip this weekend with visits to Minnesota State University and Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23.
