SEWARD, NE –
Anna Nietfeld pounded home a career-high 17 kills and the University of Mary rallied past Bulldog Bash tournament host Concordia (NE) University 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12) to earn a split on the opening day of the season.
The Marauders lost the day's opener 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18) to 13
th-ranked Northwestern (IA). Nietfeld had a game-high 10 kills for UMary.
The Marauders took the opening set against the Bulldogs 25-21. Unable to shake the host despite building leads of as many as five points and trailing 21-20, junior setter
Amanda Lopes took over. Following a kill to even the score at 21-21, Lopes served the next four points. UMary rattled off five straight points to take the first set. Nietfeld posted two kills off Lopes sets and twice the Bulldogs misfired on attack attempts.
The homestanding Bulldogs claimed the next two sets to enter intermission 2-1. With UMary leading by as many as six points at 16-10, Concordia crawled within 24-23 before a block by Nietfeld provided the winning point to force a fifth set.
Jumping out to a 6-2 lead, the Marauders soon found themselves knotted at 10-10. A pair of kills by Nietfeld powered UMary to a 14-11 advantage before Lopes scored the final point needed to propel the Marauders to victory.
A pair of freshmen,
Morgan Schnabel and
Katja Berge, also reached double figures in kills in the win. Schnabel terminated 11 balls and Berge 10. Lopes posted a double double, dishing 39 assists and making 10 digs. She also had six kills.
Geovana Almeida added 15 digs.
Kelsey Baark had 12 kills for Concordia but also had 16 attack errors. Anna Lund added 11 kills.
Facing one of the top teams in NAIA in the season opener, the two squads spilt the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores. In the second set win, the Marauders trailed just once at 13-12 before rattling off 13 of the next 20 points.
Using a 13-3 spurt, Northwestern captured the third set 25-19 before scoring five of the last six points in the fourth and decisive set to take the game 3-1.
Nietfeld led the Marauders offense with 10 kills. Berge, Schnabel and
Freddie Campbell each added eight kills. Lopes posted 30 assists and Almeida made 13 digs.
Anna Kiel recorded 12 kills for Northwestern.
UMary (1-1 overall) will face Missouri Southern State University and Chadron State College on day two of the Bulldog Bash on Saturday, Sept. 2.
