BURNSVILLE, MN – Jumping up one slot over a year ago, the University of Mary improved to ninth place in the final 2016-17 Northern Sun All-Sports standings. The Marauders are one of just six programs in the 16-school NSIC to take a forward step in the standings.
In the spring sports season, the UMary women's track & field team posted the top finish among the Marauders squads. The Marauders placed second in the women's outdoor track & field championships while the men's team finished third. Tennis placed tenth overall in the conference standings, softball 11
th and baseball 15
th.
For the year, the UMary women's cross country team earned the Marauders lone Northern Sun team title. It was the women's cross country squad's first NSIC championship.
The Marauders generated 88 points in the standings. Augustana narrowly earned its third straight NSIC all-sports title with 180 points, followed by Minnesota State (178), Winona State (127), Minnesota Duluth (119.25), St. Cloud State (118), MSU Moorhead (108.25), Sioux Falls (105.5), Northern State (98), UMary (88), Southwest Minnesota State (85.75). Concordia-St. Paul (82.5), Minot State (77), Wayne State (76.75), Bemidji State (74.75), Upper Iowa (72.25) and Minnesota Crookston (29).
The NSIC All-Sports Award is calculated by awarding the winner of each conference-sponsored championship points totaling the number of teams in that sport plus one. The next place finisher receives points totaling the number of teams less the number of places from first place. Ties in the standings at any level result in the totaling of points and equal distribution. Indoor and outdoor track & field are computed at half the total points as listed in the previous mentioned categories.
