Power display not enough as Marauders swept in season finale by Beavers

MINOT, ND – Despite out-homering the home team, the University of Mary was unable to match the Minot State University run production as the Beavers swept past the visiting Marauders 7-2 and 12-5. The Marauders drove three balls over the fence to two for the Beavers in the Northern Sun doubleheader on the final day of the season for UMary.

Darius Barlas cracked a two-run home run in the opener for the Marauders and Travis Stevens and Lane Huck both went deep in the second game. Celestino Rodriguez and Paul Vogelsang hit home runs for Minot State in the opener.

In game one, the Beavers scored first with a single run in the second. Minot State tagged on three runs in the third and one in the fourth.

Barlas placed the Marauders on the board in the fifth when the sophomore pulled a two-run shot to right field. The blast scored Drew Feuerbach, who opened the inning with a single to left field, and pulled UMary within 5-2. The Beavers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, combining a pair of hits and two UMary errors.

UMary failed to threaten again as a one-out single by Stevens in the sixth was the Marauders final baserunner over the final two innings.

Five different Marauders had hits in the game. Vogelsang posted two hits for the Beavers, driving in two runs. Rodriguez scored twice and drove in two runs. Jordan Schulz also scored twice.

Tanner Alexander pitched a complete game for the Beavers, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out six hitters in seven innings.

The Beavers grabbed control of game two immediately as the first five hitters of the game all reached base for Minot State and came around to score. UMary retaliated immediately, tallying twice in the second on a Daulton Sauce groundout and a Connor Doll infield single to pull within 5-2.

In response, Minot State added three more runs in the bottom of the second to grow its lead to 8-2. Another two runs in the fourth increased the Beavers advantage to 10-2

Stevens hit his second home run of the season in the sixth, a solo shot to close the gap to 10-3. After the Beavers tacked on two more, Huck closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to right field in the eighth, scoring Stevens for the final runs of the game.

Stevens led the Marauders with three hits, including his homer. He scored twice and drove in a run. Huck added two hits, including his first home run of the season. The senior scored once and drove in two runs. He finishes the weekend with five RBIs after driving in three yesterday.

Will Pettener and Darius Barlas both pitched scoreless innings for UMary.

Wyatt Schlosser had three hits and three RBIs for MSU. Michael Borst also had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Schulz scored three times.

The Marauders close out the season 12-35 overall and 8-30 in the Northern Sun, finishing with three more wins than last season and their most since 2014.
