BISMARCK, ND –
Brieann Backes pitched a 5-hit shutout to lead the University of Mary softball team to a split of their Northern Sun doubleheader with MSU Moorhead. Originally scheduled to be played in Moorhead, MN, but moved to Bismarck, ND, due to winter weather conditions in the Red River Valley, the Marauders opened with a 1-0 win before the Dragons claimed the second contest 7-3.
The visiting team on the scoreboard, Backes was locked in a pitcher's duel with MSUM's Tori White as both hurlers kept the game scoreless through five innings.
UMary broke through with the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth. Following consecutive singles by
Taylor Mendez and
Amber Gamboa,
Hannah Pesek was inserted to pinch run for Gamboa. After a fielder's choice forced Mendez out at third, a ground ball fielder's choice loaded the bases when the Dragons failed to make an out.
Lex Hubbard next drove a ball to center field, allowing Pesek to score from third without a throw on the sacrifice fly.
Backes made the run stand up, allowing just one hit in the final two innings and stranding three Dragons runners.
Rebekkah Keller led Mary with two of the Marauders eight hits. She also stole two bases.
Backes struck out three and walked two in seven innings for her ninth win of the season. White struck out four and walked one in her complete game effort for MSUM.
Hoping for a sweep in an effort to keep moving up in the NSIC standings, the Marauders scored first when
Colleen Crutchfield doubled and scored on a
Taylor Lara grounder in the top of two.
With a chance to break the game open, the Marauders instead left the bases full. A running storyline all game, the Marauders left the bases loaded twice and stranded a total of 14 runners.
Taking advantage of two Marauders miscues in the bottom of the second, the Dragons responded with five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The big blow was a two-run triple by Carly Williamson, who then scored the final run of the stanza on a single by Taylor Roddie.
Mary cut the lead to 5-2 in the third as
Kylie Alto doubled home Mendez before stranding two more runners.
The Dragons pulled away with two more runs in the fourth.
Scoring one more run in the fifth, Crutchfield doubled and scored on an Alto single to close within 7-3. Once again, though, the Marauders left the bases full. UMary also stranded two more runners in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Alto and Mendez both had three hits for the Marauders, who held a 12-10 edge in hits over the Dragons. Alto also had two RBIs. Crutchfield had two doubles and scored twice. Gamboa also had two hits.
Williamson tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs for MSUM. Lauren Meeker had two hits and two RBIs.
With four games left in the regular season, the Marauders (19-32 overall, 13-13 NSIC) remain tied with Minot State for ninth place in the league standings. The top ten teams make the post-season tournament.
UMary hosts NSIC-leading Minnesota State on Saturday, April 29, at 10 am. Concordia-St. Paul visits on Sunday, April 30, at noon.
