Marauders bats quieted by Warriors pitching

WINONA, MN – With the regular season winding down and the University of Mary in the hunt for a playoff slot, the Marauders offense was silenced by one of the leading teams in the Northern Sun and the region. The Warriors, currently second in the NSIC and ranked fourth in the Central region, swept the Marauders 6-0 and 8-0.

One inning proved the downfall for the Marauders in the opener. Scoreless through three innings, the Warriors crossed the plate six times in the fourth. Errors cost the Marauders dearly as five of the runs scored were unearned. The big blow was a two-out three-run double by McKenna Larson to push the Warriors lead to 5-0. Larson eventually scored on the Marauders second error of the inning.

Hannah Holtz and Taylor Mendez both went 2-for-3 to lead the Marauders offense with Mendez mixing in a double among her pair of hits. Taylor Lara and Keegam Wickman also had hits for UMary.

Lara pitched two innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out a hitter.

Larson led WSU with three RBIs and a run scored. She also pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out eight in seven innings.

Shayne Wittes had two of the Warriors eight hits and scored a run.

The UMary offense struggled further in game two. The Warriors Jordyn Kleman limited the Marauders to just a pair of hits while striking out ten.

A scoreless game through two innings, the Warriors took advantage of Marauders mistakes to score three times in the third, all with two outs. After the first two WSU hitters were retired to start the inning, two walks and a single by Mariah Schultz led to the first run of the game. A dropped fly ball by the Marauders allowed two more runs to score.

WSU added four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game earlier than scheduled.

Amber Gamboa, who doubled, and Colleen Crutchfield had the two UMary hits. Larson had two hits, including a home run, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead Winona State.

The Marauders 16-31 overall and 10-12 in the NSIC, stand tenth in the NSIC standings with eight games remaining. The top ten teams qualify for the league tournament. Winona State is 38-9 and 19-3.

UMary continues its weekend swing with a pair of games at Upper Iowa University on Sunday, April 23. The Peacocks are one game behind the Marauders in the standings,
