Midweek power outage leaves Marauders short against Cougars

BISMARCK, ND – Battling from behind much of the day, the University of Mary baseball team was unable to keep pace with the University of Sioux Falls on an overcast day. The Cougars posted a 5-0 win in the opener and downed the Marauders 14-0 in the second contest.

The Marauders managed the first scoring threat. Seth Meide took a one-out walk in the bottom of the first and proceeded to steal second but was stranded.

The Cougars jumped ahead of the Marauders in the top of the second on a run-scoring double by Connor Merriam and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Lopez to take a 2-0 lead. Sioux Falls added two more runs in the third and another in the fourth.

UMary attempted to rally in the fourth, loading the bases on a leadoff single by Travis Stevens and a pair of walks. Pinch hitter Austen DuBriel ripped a line drive barely foul down the right field line that had base-clearing potential before striking out to end the inning. The Marauders stranded two more runners in the sixth and seven total for the game.

The five runs proved more than enough for the Cougars Zak Wallner, who pitched the complete game shutout. He allowed six hits and four walks in seven innings while striking out five.

Travis Stevens and Chris Scott both had two hits for UMary. Will Pettener pitched two perfect innings of relief and Austin Ell pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The second game followed a similar script. Sioux Falls opened the scoring with a single run in the second and tallied twice in the third. The Cougars put the game away with a five-run fourth inning, using four hits, a walk and a hit batter to build an 8-0 lead.

Seth Siverson, who came off the bench in the third, collected both the Marauders hits.

In a game shortened by the run rule to seven innings, Dan Johnson pitched a complete game, He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six.

Jake Johnson pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Marauders.

Austin Richey and Jack Revier both had three hits, scored two runs and two runs batted in for USF.

The Marauders next visit Southwest Minnesota State University on April 22-23.
