BISMARCK, ND – Fighting from behind much of the day, late rallies by the University of Mary softball team left the Marauders just short in a pair of Northern Sun losses to the University of Sioux Falls. The visiting Cougars opened with a 6-5 win before taking an 8-6 decision to complete the sweep of he Marauders.
Sioux Falls jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning of game one, the only run of the first five innings. Taking advantage of three Marauders miscues, the Cougars scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning.
Immediately UMary responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Mendez cracked a run-scoring single,
Colleen Crutchfield walked with the bases loaded and
Kylie Alto followed with a two-run double. A wild pitch scored the Marauders fifth run to pull UMary within 6-5.
Despite a leadoff single and a steal of second by Rebekah Keller, the Marauders opening game comeback fell one run short.
Six different Marauders had hits and five scored runs in the opener. Alto had two RBIs in the game.
The story was similar in game two. Sioux Falls again scored in the first but this time Mary immediately responded. Taking their first lead of the day, the Marauders scored three times in the bottom of the opening inning on run-scoring singles by
Amber Gamboa and Crutchfield and an RBI groundout from
Lex Hubbard.
The Cougars knotted the game with two in the second. Two more runs in each of the third and fourth innings gave Sioux Falls a 7-3 lead.
Forced to again fight from behind, the Marauders scored three times in the fifth to climb within 7-6 as Hubbard blasted a three-run double. Looking to complete the comeback, Mary left two runners on base in the sixth. After USF extended its lead to 8-6 with a solo run in the seventh, Mary brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but the Cougars closed the game with a double play.
Hubbard had a hit and four RBIs to lead the Mary offense in game two.
Hannah Holtz,
Taylor Mendez and
Colleen Crutchfield all had two hits for the Marauders, who finished with 11 as a team.
Sydney Nieveen led USF with three hits, including a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs. Kenna Heath also had three hits.
The Marauders next host Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday, April 19.
