Early eruptions lead Bulldogs over Marauders

DULUTH, MN – Down early in both games, the University of Mary softball team couldn't recover and the University of Minnesota Duluth swept the Marauders in their first Northern Sun road doubleheader of the season. The Bulldogs captured the first game 11-0 and took the second 9-1.

The Bulldogs (20-8 overall, 4-0 NSIC) buried the Marauders (7-22, 1-3 NSIC) early in the opener. UMD used four walks and two Mary errors to score three times in the first inning. The Bulldogs struck for five more runs in the second and three in the third.

Three Marauders registered hits in the opener; Rebekkah Keller, Taylor Mendez and Kylie Alto.

Kalynn Tilton homered and doubled and drove in six runs for UMD. Natalie Wright also had a home run and a double, scored three times and drove in three runs.

Game two started quite similar to the first. Making use of two walks and two Mary errors, UMD scored three times in the first before adding one run in the second.

Limited to just a pair of hits in the first four innings, Mary scored in the fifth on a Kylie Alto home run with two outs, pulling Mary within 4-1. Taylor Lara followed with a double but was stranded.

UMD ended the game early with five runs in the sixth, capped by a three-run double from Lauren Oberle.

Mary scratched out five hits in the second game. In addition to the extra base hits from Alto and Lara, Keller, Gamboa and Crutchfield all had singles.
