AUBURNDALE, FL – Just like the old slogan for Lay's potato chips, the University of Mary baseball team refused to stop at just one, scoring multiple runs in four different innings as the Marauders slugged their way past West Virginia Wesleyan 12-7.
Andrew Beyer recorded three hits for the second straight day and
Connor Doll's 2-run home run capped a 5-run second inning for Mary.
After a scoreless first inning,
Lane Huck doubled to start off the second for the Marauders. Back-to-back errors – the second on a
Seth Meide sacrifice bunt which scored Huck – opened the flood gates. With
Daulton Sauce and Meide both in scoring position, Beyer ripped a single to drive in both baserunners. After the Bobcats recorded the second out of the inning, Doll roped a 2-run home run to left field to cap the Marauders 5-run outburst.
Wesleyan scored twice in the bottom of the third but Mary responded with two in the top of the fourth. With Sauce on third after reaching on an error and Beyer on second following a single and a stolen base,
Jaxon Ford grounded a two-run single up the middle.
Once again the Bobcats followed with two runs in the home half of the fourth inning. And once again the Marauders scored with two runs in the visitor's half of the fifth inning.
Chris Scott led off with a single and scored on a
Darius Barlas double to left center. Taking third on the throw home, Barlas scored when the catcher threw the ball into left field, building the lead to 9-4.
Mary sealed the win in the seventh. With the bases full, Meide yanked a double into the left field corner to score all three runners.
Beyer finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He was also hit by a pitch and stole a base. The senior centerfielder had three hits a day earlier in Mary's 10-4 win over Ashland.
Ford and Doll both had two hits and drove in two runs each. Sauce scored three times. Huck and Barlus both crossed the plate twice. Meide led all players with three RBIs.
Jake Johnson earned his second win of the Marauders Florida trip. The junior right-hander struck out six in five innings. He allowed six hits, two walks and four runs, though just two were earned.
Austin Ell and Wil Pettener both pitched scoreless innings, with Pettener picking up two strikeouts.
Travis Perry allowed five runs for the Bobcats, but all were unearned. He struck out three in three innings.
Hunter Rotarius, James Fraser and Joh Koon – the first three hitters for the Bobcats - all had two hits for Wesleyan.
The Marauders finish their spring trip 3-2. Overall this season Mary is 4-5. Next up for the Marauders is the Northern Sun opener at Minnesota State on March 18-19.
