Defending champ Bulldogs puts damper on Marauders home opener

BISMARCK, ND – Seth Meide and Daulton Sauce both homered and the University of Mary relief corps were stellar but the University of Mary was swept by defending Northern Sun champion University of Minnesota Duluth in the Marauders home opener. The Bulldogs captured the first game 5-2 before taking the second contest 8-3.

Meide registered three hits on the day. The junior cracked his first home run of the season in the second game, driving in two runs and scoring once. He now has a team-high 10 runs batted in.

Sauce, who leads the team in runs scored with ten, hit his first career home run in the second game.

Five Marauders relievers combined to allow seven hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks in 9.1 innings.

Mary took the initial lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning in the opener. With two outs, Darius Barlas singled to left and moved to second on a walk to Lane Huck. Drew Feuerbach followed with a single to center to score Barlas for a 1-0 lead. It was the only lead of the day for Mary.

Held to just one hit in the first two innings, the Bulldogs broke the game open in the third. After two singles and an error tied the game, Tyler Midas doubled home two runs for a 3-1 UMD lead. Another two-run double, this one by Colin Baumgard, pushed the Bulldogs lead to 5-1.

With two runners in scoring position and just one out, Kenny Slominski was summoned from the bullpen. Inducing two straight popups, Slominski stranded both runners.

Mary managed just three baserunners – including a sixth inning double by Barlas – the rest of the ballgame. After taking third base on a wild pitch, Barlas scored on a ground out by Feuerbach for the Marauders only other run of the game.

Barlas finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to lead a Mary offense limited to four hits.

Slominski pitched 1.2 scoreless innings. Austin Ell pitched a scoreless fifth inning before Cory Dixon pitched two scoreless inning to close out the game.

Tyler Wojciechowski and Marco Lucarelli both had two hits. Ryan Cunningham pitched six innings, allowing two runs, four hits and one walk while striking out five.

Instead of scoring all their runs in one inning like they did in the opener, the Bulldogs crossed the plate is six different innings of their 8-3 win in game two. UMD scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before scoring twice in the fifth and sixth innings.

After scoring the opening run of the second game on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, the next round featured a solo home run by Midas in the third. A passed ball increased UMD's lead to 3-0 before two more runs crossed the plate in the fifth.

Sauce cut the deficit to 5-1 with a solo home run in the fifth. After another two runs by the Bulldogs in the sixth, Mary pulled within 7-3 on a two-run home run by Meide in the bottom of the inning.

Travis Stevens suffered the loss for Mary, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Nick Stobbe gave up one earned round in 1.2 innings and Jake Johnson allowed just one run in three innings.

Meide finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Midas and Matt Vogt both had a pair of hits and both scored a run. Midas also drove in a run.

Baumgard picked up the win, striking out eight in five innings of work.

The Marauders continue their home stand with a visit to Municipal Ballpark by Wayne State College on April 1-2.
